State Historical Records Advisory Board

The North Dakota State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB) works to encourage the preservation of and access to historical documentation, and to provide the information, technical assistance and resources which will assist records-keepers and historical repositories in preserving North Dakota's historical records and in making them accessible.

North Dakota's SHRAB was established in 1976. The State Archivist serves as the ex officio coordinator. The governor appoints other board members to three-year, unpaid terms. SHRAB membership is intended to be representative of all types of historical organizations and repositories within the states, including public libraries, historic sites, museums, historical societies, local and state governments, universities and colleges, genealogists, and professional historians. A majority of board members must have recognized experience in the administration of historical records or archives.

SHRAB Activities & Duties

In addition to encouraging the preservation and access of records in North Dakota, the SHRAB also serves as state liaison with the programs of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC).

The NHPRC is a statutory body affiliated with the National Archives and Records Administration. The commission is authorized to undertake a wide range of activities involving the preservation, publication, and use of documentary sources relating to the history of the United States.

Since 1975, federal law requires each state, territory, and the District of Columbia to have a State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB) in order to participate in the National Historical Publications and Records Commission grant program. To view a list of NHPRC grants awarded to North Dakota, click here.

The SHRAB serves as an advisory and coordinating body. It does not acquire, preserve, or provide access to historical records. The goals and activities the board advocates can only be achieved by the combined efforts of many organizations and individuals interested in the history of North Dakota.
