The State Historical Society of North Dakota publishes the magazine History Matters and four newsletters: Plains Talk, The Preservationist, North Dakota Studies Education News, and Historical Happenings.
History Matters
History Matters, a partnership publication of the State Historical Society of North Dakota and the State Historical Society of North Dakota Foundation, began in 2026. The magazine carries forward the tradition of bringing North Dakota's past, present, and future to life with engaging content. Grounded in primary resources, History Matters explores the stories, people, cultures, and places that shape the state.
Subscriptions are a membership benefit of the State Historical Society of North Dakota Foundation. Copies may also be purchased from the Museum Store.
North Dakota History: Journal of the Northern Plains ceased publication in 2024 with Vol. 88, No. 1. Most journals can be purchased from the Museum Store. All journals can be found online at findhistory.nd.gov

Other newsletters are available to all by subscribing online.
North Dakota Studies Education News is published bimonthly during the school year and is distributed electronically to teachers, schools, libraries, and others throughout North Dakota.
The North Dakota Preservationist is an online semiannual newsletter offering highlights from the North Dakota State Historic Preservation Office.
