Vital Records: Birth, Death, Marriage, and Divorce

Vital Records data is provided in cooperation with the North Dakota Department of Health, Division of Vital Records (NDDoH). All Vital Records data is maintained by the NDDoH. Any questions about the data should be directed to the NDDoH. Contact information and instructions on how to obtain copies of Vital Records data are located at health.nd.gov/vital.

Divorce Records
The Vital Records Division of the Department of Health did not begin collecting divorce records from the county courts until 1949. Divorce cases prior to 1949 may be found in the county where the divorce case was filed. The State Archives has divorce records for over half of the counties in civil case files or divorce case files. Records series in the State Archives containing divorces.

Marriage Records data comes from two different sources:

  • Marriage records prior to 1925 comes from data that exists at the North Dakota State Archives (SHSND)
  • Marriage records from 1925-present comes from the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH)

The source is noted in the detail view for a record. If the source is SHSND, contact the State Archives. If the source is NDDoH, contact Vital Records.
