Abstract: Consists of diaries written by a Norwegian carpenter who settled in the Williston, ND area.

Provenance: Pamela Albertson, Belchertown, Massachusetts, mailed the collection to the State Historical Society on June 28, 2009, on behalf of Frederick's children: Lorraine Quie, Williston, ND; Ione Albertson, Hadley, MA; and Verne Roland, Sydney, MT. The collection was accessioned, and the finding aid created by Emily J. Ergen in July 2009.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Frederick Roland was born August 4, 1894, in Norway. Roland came to the United States through Ellis Island, and settled in the Williston area. Frederick Roland had a home in Appam, ND, and worked as a carpenter. He passed away January 9, 1974 in Williston, ND.

SCOPE AND CONTENT AND SERIES DESCRIPTION

The Frederick Roland Papers are arranged in chronological order and contain Frederick Roland's 1918 draft card, his United States Department of Labor identification card from 1936, and ration cards from World War II. The bulk of the collection consists of five-year diaries that Roland kept from 1937 to 1960, written in Norwegian. Also in the collection is a payment receipt note, a handwritten note, a bookmark made by one of Frederick's children, used stamps collected by Frederick Roland, an order form for negatives and enlargements, and three negatives of the Roland property in Appam, North Dakota.
