Provenance: The State Historical Society of North Dakota acquired the Minot Chamber of Commerce Records as a gift from the Chamber between the years 1986 and 1987. The collection was processed and inventory prepared by Kari Rombs Kohlhoff, Karen Mund, and Grace Wanttaja in November 1988.

Transfer: Four feet of material were removed from the Minot Chamber of Commerce Records and transferred to the appropriate collection management area of the State Archives. The majority consisted of publications such as newsletters, magazines, bulletins, transcripts, reports, and published state and federal documents. All publications were transferred to the library collection. Several artifacts were offered to the Museum Division in January 2014.
HISTORICAL SKETCH
The predecessor of the Minot Chamber of Commerce was the Minot Association of Commerce. Articles of Incorporation were signed on September 4, 1923 with eleven members as trustees until their successors were elected and qualified. The purpose of the association was to promote the civic, economic, and social welfare of the people of Minot and northeastern North Dakota.
G. E. Danielson was the first president, serving in 1923 and 12924, and two classes of memberships were formed: business and personal. Personal memberships would be held by any individual whether in or out of business and dues were not less than $10 per year. Business memberships could be held by any association, corporation, business, partnership, or estate and dues were $25 per year. New organizations were formed and encouraged by the Association of Commerce to promote dairying, good roads, poultry raising, lignite mining, crop diversification, and many other activities. Other early presidents were Dr. R. W. Pence, 1925-1926; Glen D. Coleord, 1927; and Hal S. Davies, 1928-1929.
After much encouragement from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other state chambers, the Minot Association of Commerce changed its name to the Minot Chamber of Commerce and its first official meeting was held in January 1954. R. P. Kresbach was elected as the first president; A. R. Weinhandl, vice-president; Glen Hanson, second vice-president; Ulric M. Gwynn, secretary; and A. L. Gimse, treasurer.
Many committees within the Chamber help the officers work with other agencies and organizations to accomplish objectives. Some of the committees are agriculture, aviation, central business district, cultural affairs, education, health and safety, fire prevention, military affairs, natural resources, public affairs, trade promotion, transportation, tourism, recreation, and conventions.
Several longtime goals of the Association of Commerce, and now the Chamber, have been accomplished or are near realization. Beginning in 1923 the Association supported the merger of Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and Burlington railroads, and this was approved in 1970. The organization worked hard to get a bridge crossing on the Missouri at Garrison which was accomplished when the Garrison Dam was finished. Other projects the Chamber has organized or supported over the years are tree planting, seed grain and potato shows, completion of Highways 2 and 83, turkey days, flower shows, air and train service, Canadian tours, Band Day, scholarship award banquets, “Name Genie Contest,” Mouse River flood control, and Four Dam limited.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Minot Chamber of Commerce records date from 1929-1986, with the bulk of the material dating from 1942-1980, and measuring 29 feet. This collection documents meetings, activities, programs, administration and projects of the Chamber. The Minot Chamber of Commerce records include minutes, 1928-1983, which were microfilmed while on loan from the Chamber, and the originals were returned to them. Also included are: subject files, 1942-1986; financial records, 1939-1983; and dockets, 1961-1978.
SERIES DESCRIPTION
The minutes are of meetings of the Board of Directors regular and special meetings and include resolutions, by-laws, amendments, budget statements, and committee reports. Committees reporting to the Board were agriculture, aviation, central business district, cultural affairs, education, health and safety, fire prevention, military affairs, natural resources, public affairs, trade promotion, transportation, tourism, recreation, and conventions.
The subject files measure 26 feet and date from 1942 to 1986. They consist of correspondence, reports, news releases, questionnaires, surveys, clippings, bulletins, brochures, and printed material. Early files relate to war bond and war salvage during World War II. Most of the files related to subjects that are of interest to the Chamber and Minot area such as band days, airbase, freight rates, Canadian tours, highways 12 and 83, crime prevention, air and Amtrak service, basketball and hockey tournaments, flood control, park and zoo, winter festivals, scholarships and awards, cultural affairs, and tourism. Subject file arrangement is alphabetical within each year.
Oversized items consist of posters, annotated maps, and architectural drawings dating from 1967 to 1980. Posters concern events such as Spring Fling, Winterfest, Western Week, track and field meets, hockey and baseball, air shows and snowmobiles races. Contains an annotated map of the state highway system and architectural drawings of Minot for proposed parking, chamber building renovation, and Roosevelt Park Zoo.
Financial records date from 1939-1982 with the bulk dating from the 1960s-1970s and measuring .75 feet. Records consist of audits, budgets, financial statements, ledger sheets, and operational expenditures. Arrangement is chronological.
Dockets, 1961-1978, measuring 2.25 feet, deal with the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission and the Civil Aeronautics Board regarding air service provided by several airlines. Several dockets contain correspondence ad reports. The dockets concern applications for Common Carrier Air Certificates, Certificates of Public Convenience and Necessity, changes in service patters, orders authorizing suspension of service, authority for a new route, and licensing to operate commercial air service. Arrangement of the dockets is numeric.
