BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Alexander George (A.G.) Burr was born in Pitrodie, Perthshire, Scotland, February 25, 1871, to Reverend Alexander Burr (1890-1897) and Mary MacLachlen Burr (1836-1907?). Reverend Alexander Burr was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, and Mary M. Burr was born either in Belfast, Ireland, or Iverness, Scotland. Both were pioneers in the settlement of Bottineau County, and both died in Bottineau, ND. A.G. Burr lived with his parents in Trinidad and Ontario until coming with them to Dakota Territory (DT) in September 1883. A.G. Burr had four sisters: Annie Burr (1869-1938), Flora Cameron Burr (1872-1956), Catherine Mary Burr (1874-1940), and Elsie Duthie Burr (1876-1954).

Throughout his lifetime, A.G. Burr lived in Perthshire, Scotland, Trinidad, Ontario, Canada, Walsh County, DT, Bottineau, DT/ND, Ann Arbor, MI, and eventually in Rugby and Bismarck, ND. He attended Bottineau county elementary school, was privately tutored at the secondary level, and graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1894. He was admitted to the North Dakota bar in 1894.

On June 7, 1900, in Grand Forks, ND, Burr married Josephine Roberta Carothers at her home. Carothers was born to Reverend Robert Carothers and Emeline E. (Milligan) Carothers at Turtle Creek, PA, on April 27, 1872. In 1877 she moved to IA, where her father was in charge of the State School of the Blind. After his death in 1882, the family returned to PA and in April 1883 migrated to DT and settled in Grand Forks County. They lived on a farm about five miles north of the village of Emerado until 1892 when they moved to Grand Forks. Roberta was a student for several years at the University of North Dakota. A.G. and Roberta Burr had four children: Alexander Carothers (1901-1977), Mary Margaretta (1902-1999), Robert MacLachlan (1904-1920) and Roberta Cameron (1910- ). Mrs. Burr moved to Bottineau after her marriage, and lived there until the family moved to Rugby on January 4, 1909. Roberta Burr died December 17, 1915 at the home of her brother Charles, in Santa Ana, CA.

A.G. Burr worked as an attorney and as states attorney at Bottineau (1894-1908), district judge at Rugby (1908-1926), and ND Supreme Court Justice, later Chief Justice (1926-1949). In 1938, he received an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from the University Of North Dakota. He was involved in the Presbyterian Church: in 1904, he was moderator of the ND synod, was later moderator of Bismarck presbytery, was an ordained elder, and a member of the permanent judicial committee of the Presbyterian general assembly. Burr was also involved in the Democratic Party, the Masons (New York and Scottish rites), the Kiwanis Club, Odd Fellows, and was on the Jamestown College Board of trustees. Burr was a prolific speaker, and published The Apostle Paul and the Roman Law and contributed to several fraternal and religious magazines. He was a patriotic man, a WWI Four Minute Men speaker for Liberty Loan drives, and chairman of the Pierce County American Red Cross, who was interested in international affairs, involved in the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, the World’s Federation of Peace, and organizations supporting the League of Nations. A.G. Burr died February 8, 1951 in Bismarck, ND.
