He received his undergraduate degree in 1892, his master's degree in 1893, and his Ph.D. in 1895, all from the University of Wisconsin. Libby was an instructor in the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin - Madison from 1895 to 1902.  He moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1902, became head of the History Department at the University of North Dakota, and retired in 1945.

Dr. Libby helped reorganize the State Historical Society of North Dakota and served as its secretary from 1905 to 1945. He was president of the North Dakota Audubon Society from 1903 to 1909, president of the State Library Commission in 1909, and president of the Mississippi Valley Historical Association in 1910. SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Orin Grant Libby Collection dates from 1902 to 1943 and occupies twenty and three-fourths cubic feet. The Collection is divided into five series reflecting Libby's professional and personal activities: Secretary of the State Historical Society of North Dakota, Grand Historian of the North Dakota Masonic Grand Lodge, Professor of History at the University of North Dakota, and author of published articles.

Series I, Secretary of the State Historical Society of North Dakota, includes records relating to Libby's tenure as Secretary of the State Historical Society of North Dakota and consists of correspondence, research materials, and miscellaneous manuscripts. The correspondence includes outgoing letters, in-coming letters, and subject files, and measures nearly 12 cubic feet.  The outgoing letters date from 1905 to 1943 and are arranged chronologically. The incoming letters date from 1902 to 1943 and are arranged alphabetically. The subject files, dating 1904 to 1941, consist of correspondence concerning administration of the agency, historical research and investigations, curatorial applications, and agency projects.

The research materials occupy approximately 8 cubic feet and consist of originals and copies of materials of historical value, including biographies; census and enumeration records; Civil War and World War I letters; diaries and journals; newspaper clippings; reports; documents; historical sketches; and notebooks.  The research materials provide information on cities and counties, churches, fur trade, Indians, military expeditions and forts, and transportation.  Libby's notebooks, measuring ½ cubic foot, detail travel, activities, and accounts while conducting agency business.  Prior to processing, the research materials were arranged in groups reflecting either similar subject matter or format. Many items in the Series are hand-drawn manuscript maps that were prepared by or for O. G. Libby during his time as Secretary of the State Historical Society of North Dakota, 1905-1945. Several maps in the Series were created to document places and events recalled by North Dakota  residents and others, supplemented with reminiscences and notes, and given to Libby. Finally, the Series includes commercially printed maps that were likely used or collected by Libby during his course of research and service to the State Historical Society of North Dakota.

Researchers should note that a collection of Orin Libby papers are available in the Orin G.
