Abstract: Black and white images, backed with fabric from the Badlands and Red River Valley received by Stephen S. Smith’s grandfather from a friend who spent some time in the Dakotas in 1909. Photographs show Badlands scenery, ranching on the Q Cuba Ranch north of Dickinson ND, grain crops and harvested oats in the Red River Valley, and Medora from across the Little Missouri River.
Provenance: The State Historical Society of North Dakota acquired this collection from Stephen S. Smith in January 1979. Several of the photos have a note on the reverse, ‘loaned by Mr. Crowell, Fargo’.
