
    World War I poster SHSND# 10935-P113Although it may seem an uncomfortable  partnership, military events including war, conquest, and life at military  posts often include vegetable gardening or the desperate results from the lack  of vegetables.  Records from North Dakota’s earliest  army posts raise the issue of the value of fresh vegetables in relation to the  soldiers’ health.  Unhealthy soldiers  don’t serve well, and at a distance of several hundred miles from the  territorial capitol at Yankton, dead soldiers were hard to replace.
