Hands-on Summer School

Maria Mears, Meg Glazier-Anderson, Elenore Leonard, Zach Kautzman, and Brian Faris visit Double Ditch State Historic Site during the Great Intern Tour 2016.

Each year the State Historical Society offers paid internships as an educational opportunity for college students. This summer we hosted five interns and temporary staff at the ND Heritage Center, and these are their reflections.

Brian Faris

Visitor Services Intern, Communications & Education Division
Undergraduate student at North Dakota State University, hospitality and tourism management

"As visitor services intern I worked alongside the events coordinator in planning and implementing events. I also worked with the visitor services coordinator to assist volunteers and communicate with museum visitors. With my appreciation of history and unique major, the experience I obtained at the State Museum was very beneficial in receiving real-world experience."

Meg Glazier-Anderson

Collections Intern, Museum Division
Graduate student at Syracuse University, museum studies with focus on cultural heritage preservation

"The main project I was assigned for the summer entailed performing an inventory report on the medical/dental collection in storage. An inventory involves research, filling in missing information in the database, photographing, labeling, and relocating each item. Aside from this ongoing project, I assisted in exhibition prep and installation for four very different exhibits. I have learned so much in the three short months at the State Historical Society and feel very fortunate to have been given this opportunity."

Zach Kautzman

Reading Room Assistant, State Archives
Recent graduate of North Dakota State University, public history and history

"I have thoroughly enjoyed the time that I have spent here at the Archives working with patrons who come in, cataloging photo collections, and working with the staff. It has been great to not only learn new things about working in an archival setting, but to also put everything I learned in school into practice. The experience I have gained from working here will help immensely when I move to Tennessee to pursue a master’s degree in public history."

Elenore Leonard

Collections Intern, Museum Division
Graduate student at University of Kansas, museum studies

"This summer I had the opportunity to explore so much of the collection here as well as help out with exhibits, environmental issues, and the day-to-day running of a museum. Not only have I done much more than I would have imagined, I have developed and used skills I never thought I would need so much — sewing, ironing, and more than a little photography. This internship has more than solidified my belief that this is the kind of work I want to be doing."

Maria Mears

Registration Intern, Museum Division
Graduate student at Eastern Illinois University, historical administration

"Two of my bigger projects this summer have been editing and updating our collection procedures manual and accessioning or deaccessioning uncatalogued objects found in the collection. Helping to solve some of the mysteries behind these objects has been interesting and rewarding."
