Provenance: The State Historical Society of North Dakota acquired the Episcopal Diocese of North Dakota Records from the Diocese in various lots, 1986-1987. This record series was processed and the inventory prepared by Lotte Bailey, Kari Rombs Kohlhoff, Bonnie Sheldon, and Grace Wanttaja in January 1988.

Transfer: Two feet of material was removed from the Episcopal Diocese of North Dakota Records and transferred to the appropriate collection management area of the State Archives. The transferred material consists of books, copies of the Common Book of Prayer, journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, Indian publications, and an ecumenical handbook.
Twenty-five sets of architectural drawings of Episcopal Church buildings were removed and incorporated in the Architectural Drawings Collection. Descriptions of Episcopal Church building drawings follow the collection inventory.
One foot of photographic material was transferred to the Photo Archives. This material consisted of 235 black and white photographs, 2 scrapbooks of black and white photographs, 66 colored photographs and 1 negative. The photos included pictures of church choirs, pastors, ordinations, meetings, confirmations, Indian convocations, camping groups, scenes from the Badlands, churches, and Sunday school classes.
A map of Bismarck and a reservation map were transferred to the map collection.
Three post cards were placed in the philatelic collection. Ephemera transferred includes a button, a feather, and a napkin printed with "Episcopal Church Needs You."
Oversize items placed in oversize folders include two posters on Indian workshops, "Design Encounter 82," and architectural drawings of the Grand Forks Sunnyside Terrace Addition.
Transferred to the Museum were liturgical vessels donated in memory of Josephine Dominick and a ceremonial trowel which was presented to the Right Reverend D. Walker by Mr. and Mrs. Sydney C. Lough on the occasion of the laying of the cornerstone of St. James Church in Norwood, North Dakota, on St. Peter's Day, 1893.

HISTORICAL SKETCH
The first Episcopal services held in the northern half of Dakota Territory were offered by a layman, Nathaniel Pitt Longford, between Fargo and Valley City in 1862. Reverend Joseph A. Gilfillan was the first Episcopal priest to hold services in what is now North Dakota, in a tent at Fargo on August 29, 1872. Bishop Whipple made the first Episcopal visit to the Red River area, holding services in a Presbyterian schoolhouse in Moorhead on December 8, 1873.
The need for a church building at Fargo was apparent in 1872 and assistance was asked of the Board of Missions at New York. With a grant of $500 and contributions from businesses, the first Episcopal church in North Dakota was finished early in 1876 at Fargo. Christ Church was the name of the new church and Reverend Richard Wainwright served as its first minister. In the summer of 1876 the church was destroyed by a windstorm, rebuilt by the congregation in 1881, and reorganized into the Gethsemane Church.
The first Episcopal Bishop of North Dakota was William D. Walker who served from 1883 to 1897. Other bishops and dates they served were: Samuel C. Edsall, 1899-1901; Cameron Mann, 1901-1913; John P. Tyler, 1914-1931; Frederick B. Bartlett, 1931-1935; Douglas H. Atwill, 1937-1951; Richard Emery, 1951-1964; George T. Masuda, 1965-1979; and Harold A. Hopkins, 1980-.
Population fluctuations are the most important factor in the numerical growth and decline of Episcopal Churches in North Dakota. In 1916, services were held in 124 towns and villages, but by 1984 only 27 had Episcopal churches. Parishes still in existence at the Centennial Convention of 1984 are listed below.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Episcopal Diocese of North Dakota Records date from 1881 to 1987 and measure 21 feet. This collection documents the people involved and activities pursued by the Episcopal Church to promote religious and educational interests in North Dakota. The Episcopal Diocese of North Dakota Records consist of two record groups and contain nine record series. The first group, state records, contains the following record series: minutes, 1900-1985, 4 ft.; subject files, 1900-1987, 7 ft.; parish files, 1929-1983, 2 ft; property files, 1885-1979, 1 ft.; personnel files, 1899-1984, 2 ft.; scrapbooks, 1949-1967, 2 folders and 6 oversize volumes; Indian Convocation records, 1893-1984, 4 folders; and financial records, including financial statements (1974-1978, 2 ft. and 4 oversize volumes), and journals (1935-1959, 2 folders and 2 oversize volumes). The second record group, parish (local) records, measure 1.5 ft. and date from 1884-1981.
Minutes measure 4 ft. and date from 1900 to 1985. The minutes series includes minutes from the Bishop's Council of Advice, and church committees. The church committee minutes include: Canons, Coalition 14, Cursillo, Steering, Finance, Investment, Renewal and Evangelism, Restructure, Standing, Dakota Leadership, Episcopal Foundation, Mission and Church Extension, and United Church Ministry. The minutes focus on administration, appointments, committees, councils, ministerial activities, events, resource management, programs, and conventions. The minutes are arranged chronologically.
Subject files date from 1900 to 1987 and measure 7 ft. This series consist of agenda, correspondence, newspaper clippings, memoranda, notes, reports, brochures, programs, and pamphlets. Included are files on Indian affairs, HUD and housing, trust funds, and stewardship. Correspondence and papers of Bishops Masuda, Emery, and Hopkins are in the subject files. This series is arranged alphabetically by keyword.
Parish files measure 2 ft. and date from 1929 to 1983. This series consists of church histories, pastor's sermons, programs of events, correspondence, dedications, and reports. The files deal largely with financial matters, e.g. mortgages, Sunday school expenses, budgets, monthly treasurer's reports, and church upkeep. The parish files are arranged alphabetically by place.
Property files date from 1885 to 1979 and measure 1 ft. This series documents property rights and consists of legal documents and correspondence pertaining to church property. Legal documents included in this series are tax deeds, quit-claim deeds, warranty deeds, and purchase agreements for parishes. Most of the correspondence consists of letters of remittance, offers to purchase, and the price to be paid. Arrangement of the property files is alphabetical by place.
Personnel files measure 2 ft. and date from 1899-1984. The personnel files consist of correspondence between the Bishop and pastors of parishes, and seminarians about to be ordained. This series includes letters of recommendation, resumes, records of salaries paid, and records of travel expenses for pastors and students. The personnel files are arranged alphabetically by name.
Scrapbooks date from 1931-1967 and measure 1/4 ft. and 6 oversize volumes. Scrapbook 1 belonged to Bishop Emery which consists of newspaper clippings, and black and white photos. Included are details of his consecration, installation, and death. Scrapbook 2 consists of programs, clippings, and photos of the general conventions at Detroit, Michigan (1961) and St. Louis, Missouri (1964). Scrapbook 3 belonged to Bishop Masuda and consists of newspaper clippings and photos of his consecration as bishop. Scrapbook 4 contains programs, clippings, and photos of convocations in various cities of North Dakota. Scrapbook 5 consists of ordinations of priests by Bishop Emery (1952-1961), Bishop Masuda (1965-1979), and Bishop McNairy (1964) of Minnesota. Included in the scrapbook are programs, clippings, and photos of the events. Scrapbook 6 contains clippings, photos, and programs of various church events in North Dakota. The scrapbooks are arranged chronologically.
The Indian Convocation records date from 1893 to 1983 and occupy 4 folders. The Indian Convocation records include announcement books, population statistic book, clippings, programs, and photos of conventions and convocations. The records detail events at Indian Convocations. The Indian Convocations records are arranged chronologically.
Financial records include journals, ledgers, and financial statements and reports. The journals date from 1935 to 1959 and are in 2 folders and 2 oversize volumes. Information in the journals includes operating expenses, insurance on buildings, trust funds, amount of loans, annuities, rental property, interest, travel expenses, and salaries paid. The journals are arranged chronologically. Ledgers date from 1949 to 1979 and measure 2 ft. and 4 oversize volumes. Included are ledgers for individual parishes, trust funds, and district assessment funds. Information found in these ledgers may include salaries paid, mitebox offerings, loans, taxes paid, and general convention grants. Statistics on baptisms and confirmations are included in the 4 oversize ledgers. The ledgers are arranged chronologically. Financial statements and reports date from 1974 to 1984 and measure 1 ft. Included in the financial statements and reports is information on capital additions, trust funds, operating statements, restricted funds, missionary quotas, and investments. The financial statements and reports are arranged chronologically.
Record group 2, parish records, measures 1 ½ ft. and 3 oversize volumes dating from 1884-1981. This series consists of local parish record books from churches in Bathgate, Beach, Cando, Casselton, Dunseith, Detroit Lakes, Forrest River, Kenmare, Larimore, Lawton, Mayville, Minnewaukan, Rolla, and Wahpeton. Included in the parish record series are minutes; correspondence; records of baptisms, confirmations, burials and marriages; and lists of families. The number of records and amount of information on each parish varies. The parish records are arranged alphabetically by place name.
