BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH, MAJOR JAMES M. HANLEY, SR.
Mandan Pioneer, 1 February 1947

James M. Hanley, Sr., 70, veteran of the Spanish American War, and the Mexican border war and World War I, and for many years a prominent figure in the civic and legal circles in Mandan, passed away at his home here late Friday after a long illness which had become acute Thursday.

James Martin Hanley was born in Winona, MN, January 6, 1877. He graduated from the Kasson, MN, high school in 1893. He attended Carleton College, Northfield, MN, 1894-1895, studied law with Hon. Peter McGovern in Waseca, MN, and was admitted to the bar in 1899. He came to Mandan in 1903 and formed the law partnership of Voss and Hanley. Later he was associated in the law firm of Hanley and Sullivan, and later served as judge of the sixth judicial district.

Mr. Hanley was active in politics, served in the state legislature, and in 1911 served as speaker of the North Dakota House of Representatives. In 1926 he was a candidate for governor of North Dakota, being defeated by the late Gov. Sorlie. As judge, he held the first term of court ever held in Sioux county and also presided at the first term of court held in the newly organized Grant county.
March 3, 1903, he was married to Miss Irma Lewis at Waseca, MN. To this union, was born a son and three daughters. Atty. James M. Hanley, Jr., resides in Bismarck; Mrs. Emmet McCormick (Josephine), Great Falls, MT; Mrs. Juel Lium (Irma Jane), Minot; Mrs. Robert Paris (Lewista), Willmar, MN. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Maude McGregor, Reno, NV; a brother, Jasper Hanley, Minneapolis. Mrs. Hanley died in September 1929. October 27, 1943, he was married to Mrs. Nona Smith, Mandan, who also survives him.

Major Hanley was intensely interested in military affairs, and in the spring of 1898 enlisted in Co. K of the 12th Minnesota regiment and sent south with his regiment when the Spanish American war broke out. He mustered out in 1899, serving in the United States only.

In 1906 he helped in the organizing of Co. F of the North Dakota National Guard and Nov. 28, was commissioned as captain. He was promoted to major March 31, 1915. June 19, 1916, he was called into federal service for the Mexican border patrol duty and served as commanding officer, third battalion, NDNG.

He resigned at Mercedes, TX, on July 18, 1916, to take up his duties as judge of the district court. He was again called into federal service on July 15, 1917, when the First World War broke out and was assigned to the Second Inf., NDNG. He was later assigned to the 148th machine gun battalion, 1st division. He served overseas from Jan. 10, 1918 to Feb. 23, 1919 and was engaged in the battles of St. Mihiel, St. Die and Lucy (Lorraine).

He was then discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa, March 7, 1919 as a major. When World War II broke out, he again offered his services to the government, but was not called. He has practiced law in Mandan since that time but has not been active in recent years.

Hanley was the first president of the Mandan Rotary club, having been one of the organizers, in 1921, and served as president for 2 years. He was a member of the Elks, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the United Spanish American Veterans. He took a prominent part, both nationally and locally in organizing the Legion. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

One of Hanley’s first public assignments after he came to Mandan was to act as “orator of the day” at the first Fourth of July celebration held at Flasher. He recalled that it took two days to make the trip by horse and buggy, one going, one returning, and that there were but two houses on the trail between Mandan and Flasher.

Hanley was well known over the entire state, and particularly in the western section and had countless
friends and acquaintances.
