Public Invited to Victorian Tea Dance in April

BISMARCK – The public is invited to a Victorian Tea Dance at the Former Governors’ Mansion State Historic Site in Bismarck on Sunday, April 21, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for age 12 and under. Registration is required and space is limited.

Guests of the Victorian Tea Dance are requested, but not required, to dress in period clothing. Period music will be performed by Danielle Hanna of Mandan. Dance instructor Sarah Walker of Bismarck will lead guests in a variety of period dances. Guests will also have the opportunity to answer trivia questions and participate in a scavenger hunt for prizes.

Tea dances were a form of casual entertainment from the 1880s through the late 1920s. Generally held in late afternoon, they often followed garden parties, afternoon tea, and even at times the local ballgame. Though generally planned, tea dances often broke out spontaneously following an event. Tea dances were popular with the middle and lower classes because of reduced costs and less formal attire compared to hosting a ballroom dance. Tea, coffee and champagne were commonly served. Food was generally light.

To register for the tea dance, contact Johnathan Campbell at Jcampbell@nd.gov or 701.328.9528.
