BISMARCK – Two former schools in North Dakota have been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register of Historic Places is the federal government’s list of properties it considers worthy of preservation and recognition.
Green Consolidated School #99, near Valley City in Barnes County, is the best preserved open country consolidated school in North Dakota. The school educated students from 1916 until 1974 and since then has been used as a community center. This school met all of the state standards for education and the building gives clear physical testimony to what those standards were during the time the school operated.
Florence Lake School #3 in Burleigh County was originally built as Sterling School #2 in 1917 but was moved to Florence Lake Township in 1937 after the earlier school burned. This small prairie schoolhouse has unusual architectural details that recall the Classical Style.
Contrary to some misconceptions about the National Register program, listing in it does not prevent owners from altering their property, restricting the use or sale of the property, or establish times requiring that the property must be open to the public. Entry into the National Register of Historic Places does give a property prestige, provides protection from federally-assisted projects, and provides eligibility for certain preservation financial incentives.
