PEMBINA – Trick or treaters will be able to get an early start on Halloween by visiting the Pembina State Museum Thursday afternoon, October 29. The day’s events will feature children’s Halloween activities, games and crafts from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The wearing of costumes is encouraged but is not mandatory.
The programs are free and open to the public.
The October 29 events are sponsored by the state’s history agency, the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
Two of the Pembina State Museum’s unique features are a seven-story observation tower that offers visitors a spectacular view of the Red River Valley, and a Travel Information Center that informs and directs tourists to other locations and activities statewide. It also has two galleries. The permanent exhibit gallery features 100 million years of regional history from the Cretaceous Period to contemporary times. The second gallery houses temporary and traveling exhibits highlighting regional and state history.
Visitors will see the permanent exhibit, Pembina Today, which opened in late May. The display highlights current trends in industry, agriculture, and recreation in northeast North Dakota. They will also see the exhibit, Emigrants from the Empire: North Dakota’s Germans. This exhibit investigates what it means to be German in North Dakota before and after both world wars. Artifacts, photographs, and documents tell the story of who they are, how and why they emigrated, and how their culture and traditions still thrive in North Dakota. It will be at the museum through February 7, 2010.
The Pembina State Museum is located off Exit 215 on I-29 at Pembina, North Dakota. Admission is free. There is no charge for children ages 12 and under to visit the observation tower. The tower charge for youth ages 13 to 18 is 50 cents, and $2 for adults. It is open year-round, closed only on New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
