10098 Bertha Rachel Palmer
Box 5 of the Bertha Palmer Papers contains the curriculum of 1929 for rural schools.  Bertha Palmer was the Superintendent of the Department of Public Instruction.  The curriculum outlines what subjects the rural schools should teach.  It also informs teachers of when to teach the curriculum.  The subjects the curriculum covers are agriculture, arithmetic, handwriting and language, literature and reading, geography and citizenship, heath education and music.

10211 Ted and Louise Kopseng
This box contains manuscripts by Louise Kopseng.  Louise grew up in western North Dakota.  One of the manuscripts recalls the day her parents’ ranch had electricity.  Another manuscript recalls Louise’s time as a teacher in rural North Dakota.  The last manuscript discusses how her family managed to live in a remote place right after their father homesteaded. 

11095 Masseth-Schneider Family
This collection contains first grade school books used in classrooms in 1931.  There is other information in the collection that provides information about St. Mary’s school in Bismarck as the school the children of the family attended. 

20009 Ada C. Croffard
This folder contains a letter written by Ada Croffard to her fellow teachers at the National Education Association convention.  She writes about a schoolhouse in early Fargo.  She describes what the schoolhouse looks like and what it was like to teach in a classroom.  She also writes about the settlement of early Fargo and the Red River Valley.

20051 Frank A. Wardell
The first school in North Dakota was in Pembina in 1875.  Frank A. Wardell was one of the first teachers at the school in Pembina.  He reflects on what it was like to be a teacher in a small village.  He provides information on class subjects, the building, and school management.  Wardell juggled many different education levels every day.

20238 Ellen Calder Delong
Ellen Calder Delong came to Cavalier County with her family as a child in 1884.  She recalls growing up on the prairies in her memoir.  She writes about the schoolhouse, farming, and churches.

20239 Charles H. Hubell
In 1888, Charles H. Hubell was a farmer and a teacher in rural North Dakota.  His diary contains information about the daily weather and about each school day. Hubell recalls all the duties he had as a teacher. Not only did he teach the students, he also had to start the fire before school and clean the whole schoolhouse.

20876 Louise M. Krueger
Louis M. Kruger became principal of Oakes High School.  However, before that, she was a teacher in Ashley.  This collection contains a grade book that Kruger kept while teaching.  The grade book provides a glimpse at how teachers graded their students back in the early 1900s. 

20904 Alexander Family History
The Alexander family moved around the United States quite a bit.  However, for the most part, the children grew up in North Dakota.  This is the autobiography of Joseph Alexander.  It documents his time on his family’s ranch near Epping, North Dakota.  Joseph remembers schooling, ranching, and other various activities that occurred while growing up.

20972 Louise Hanson
Teachers during the settlement period of North Dakota were completely in charge of the students and the schoolhouse.  This collection contains a teacher’s contract.  The contract contains the monthly wage, but it also states other duties of the teacher. 

40950 McIntosh County Superintendent of Schools Correspondence and 8th Grade Examinations
Box 2 Folder 4 of this collection contains eighth grade exams from 1940.  The areas tested include English, geography, agriculture, mathematics, and social studies.
