Heritage Center Expansion Project

DAY VIEW OF EAST ENTRANCE

Heritage Center proposed expansion from east

The new lobby will be the physical and spiritual heart of the Heritage Center.  Serving as the new main entry to the Heritage Center, the lobby’s intricate structure and glass walls create a memorable gathering space for visitors to the Museum and for guests at after-hours events.  As the starting point and ending point of one’s visit to the Heritage Center, the lobby is adjacent to and provides access to many of the major spaces and visitor services areas of the building, including the information area, Great Plains Theater, Museum Store, Hub of History, Corridor of History, and the Governors Gallery, Geological Time Gallery, First People Gallery, and Inspiration, Opportunities and Innovation Gallery.

NIGHT VIEW OF LOBBY FROM EAST

Heritage Center proposed expansion from southeast

The glass walls of the lobby create a transparency from inside and outside.  This transparency creates a welcoming invitation to visitors from State Street, the parking lot and the entry terrace.  As the signature element of the Heritage Center’s exterior, the lobby will glow at night, acting as a beacon and displaying the energy and life of the Heritage Center to the community beyond.

The expansion of the North Dakota Heritage Center was proposed more than 25 years ago, when the original designs were developed for the state's largest museum and headquarters for the state's history agency. It was projected that collections space for artifacts and exhibit spaces would be full—and they are. It is now time for expansion.

Exhibits in the current gallery tell the story of North Dakota up to the late 1930's—leaving the Great Depression as the "most current" tale of the people of our state. There is now more than 70 years of additional history to share with our children, citizens and visitors. New exhibit spaces will tell the story of our emerging industries—coal, gas, wind power, agriculture processing, manufacturing and technology. Exhibits would also detail the story of our First People and explore Geological Time and dinosaurs as well as a temporary gallery for touring exhibits and a 3-D theater.

This exciting new facility would make the North Dakota Heritage Center the "Smithsonian of the Plains" and the "hub of history" for our state. Historic sites and major attractions and landscapes would be showcased for visitors enticing them to move across the state in search of further "legendary adventures."
