Join archaeologists and cyclists on Saturday, June 17 as we cycle the highway to history! Your adventure begins at Chief Lookings Village, travels over eight miles to Double Ditch Indian Village State Historic Site, and ends with the return trip to Chief Lookings Village. Participate in guided tours and historic presentations at both sites. Fun for all ages and skill levels!

  • Helmets are mandatory
  • Bright, reflective clothing is encouraged
  • Cyclists must provide their own bicycle
  • This is not a race, it’s a casual ride…ride at your own pace
  • Total roundtrip: 16.8 miles
  • Snacks and water will be provided but cyclists are strongly encouraged to bring a water bottle
  • Participants will receive a goody bag when registering at Chief Lookings Village
  • Cyclists must ride back to Chief Lookings Village from Double Ditch (or arrange for alternative transportation).
    • Transportation will not be provided from Double Ditch to Chief Lookings Village
  • The route is not closed to traffic. In accordance with ND Law (NDCC 39-10.1), please remember:
    • Ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable
    • A group of individuals riding bicycles upon a roadway may not ride more than two abreast
    • Every person riding a bicycle upon a roadway is granted all of the rights and is subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle



  • Designated parking spots are very limited at Chief Lookings Village
  • You cannot park along the roadside within Chief Lookings Village
  • Alternate parking is available at:
    • The State Retirement and Investment Office on the north side of Burnt Boat Drive (directly across the street from the entrance to Chief Lookings Village)
    • Along legally marked sections of Burnt Boat Drive
    • Pioneer Park (base of hill below Chief Lookings Village on River Road)
