HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Bismarck Women's Bowling Association held their first meeting on November 26, 1940, under the direction of Sally Hall, President. They chartered with the Women's International Bowling Congress (WIBC) on December 11, 1940. They bowled at Capitol Recreation, which had eight lanes, with Abe Abrahamson, proprietor. In 1946, Capitol Recreation was destroyed by fire. The Bismarck Bowling Center opened with eight lanes on North 5th Street, where White Drug stands today, with Joe Zahn and Art Bentson, proprietors. By 1950, the Association had grown and they bowled at the Bismarck Bowling Center and Nicola Lanes. In 1956, the Bismarck Bowling Center moved to 23rd Street, as a 12 lane center, and in 1958, added 8 more lanes. Ten Spot Lanes was built and opened its doors in December 1958. The Bismarck Women's Bowling Association amended their by-laws and became the Bismarck-Mandan Women's Bowling Association on August 27, 1959. In the 1960s, Midway Lanes, a 24 lane center, was built on the strip in Mandan by Harry Semerad. Capitol Plaza Lanes, a 40 lane center, was built and opened its doors in January 1982.  Bismarck Bowling Center closed in May 1983.

In 1985, the Bismarck-Mandan Women's Bowling Association made their bid at the 1985 Women's International Bowling Congress Annual Meeting in Toledo, Ohio, to host the 1989 Women's International Bowling Congress in 1989. The tournament was held in April 1989. The association celebrated its 50 year anniversary in 1990.
