Abstract: Consists of correspondence, subject files, legal documents, photographs, scrapbooks, printed material, notes, and desk diaries. Papers relate primarily to family affairs and Morris’ legal practice.

Provenance: The State Historical Society of North Dakota acquired the Catherine Morris Papers from Patricia Lidstrom in March 1983 and from Terry Nelson in August 2003.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Catherine E. Morris was born December 3, 1898 in Bismarck, North Dakota to Edward E. and Catherine (Richey) Morris. She had one sister, Boniface Morris. Catherine graduated from Bismarck High School in 1917 and then worked for the law firm Dullam and Young. She studied law through the American Extension University and was admitted to the bar in January 1928, the second woman in North Dakota admitted to the bar. When Clyde Young retired In January 1961 she opened her private law office. Catherine Morris practiced law for 50 years and retired in 1982 She was a charter member of Zonta Women's International Service Club and a member of Pioneer Daughters, the American Bar Association, the North Dakota Bar Association, the Burleigh County Bar Association, and National Association of Women Lawyers. Catherine Morris died June 5, 1988 at St. Vincent's Nursing Home in Bismarck.
