Abstract: Records include journals, ledgers, contracts, deeds, abstracts, correspondence, and photographs relating to the land and cattle operation in Dickey County.

Provenance: The State Historical Society of North Dakota acquired the H. J. Johnson Land and Cattle Company Records from Mrs. George Humphreys in 1959 and 1960. Additional materials were donated by Dr. Earl Hagen on September 25, 1992.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

H. J. Johnson was born August 23, 1873 in Laaland, a small island off the coast of Denmark. He came to this country with his grandparents and other relatives at the age of 13. He worked on the Hans Low farm and attended school in Hudson Township. In the summers he worked on the farm and winters he attended business college at Sauk Centre, Minnesota. Later he worked in a store at Beardsley, Minnesota.
On June 10, 1908 he married Grace Richards and they had two daughters, Janet (Mrs. George Humphreys) and Jean who died in infancy.
Mr. Johnson started in the land business at Oakes at the age of 25 and continued in that business for 57 years. He died August 29, 1956 in Oakes, ND.
Grace Ethel Johnson was born October 2, 1879 in Arlington, Iowa. She was the youngest of eight children. Mrs. Johnson died July 2, 1949.
